Food Day 2012: October 24th
Food Day is a new, national, annual celebration on October 24th created by the Center for Science in the Public Interest to increase awareness and action for a more sustainable food future. Communities across the nation will be hosting Food Day events and activities to support Food Day’s six commitments:
- Reduce diet-related disease by promoting safe, healthy foods
- Support sustainable farms & limit subsidies to big agribusiness
- Expand access to food and alleviate hunger
- Protect the environment & animals by reforming factory farms
- Promote health by curbing junk-food marketing to kids
- Support fair conditions for food and farm workers
UNH will be participating in Food Day with a signature event on October 24th in MUB Theater II:
- 2:30-4 PM: Fair Trade Café: Sample FREE Fair Trade coffee, chocolate, and other treats at our Cafe in the foyer outside of the MUB theatres!
- 4-5:15 PM: Rob Everts, Co-Founder, Equal Exchange. "Equal Exchange: A Radical Model for Global Food, Farming & Business." Equal Exchange was the first company to bring a Fair Trade product (coffee) to the US marketplace in 1986, and has since led expansion into many other categories (tea, chocolate etc.) Equal Exchange’s pioneering efforts as a social change organization have played a major role in the widespread adoption of Fair Trade products by mainstream US companies in the last 25 years. This talk is part of the NH International Seminar and is co-sponsored by the UNH Center for International Education, the Sustainability Institute at UNH, and Net Impact UNH.
- 5:15-5:45 PM: Fair Trade Café: Sample FREE Fair Trade coffee, chocolate, and other treats at our Cafe in the foyer outside of the MUB theatres!
- 5:45 - 7:00 PM: What does Fair Trade mean locally? A panel discussion featuring Rick MacDonald (UNH Dining), Lynda Brushett (Cooperative Development Institute), Erin Corcoran (UNH School of Law), and Erik Chapman (UNH Sea Grant/Cooperative Extension).
