Background
The Sustainability Academy and the Museum of Art of the University of New Hampshire are hosting a video competition to coincide with the Janury 28 - April 4, 2012 exhibition Chris Jordan: Running The Numbers at the Museum of Art, UNH. The large-format digital photographs on view in Chris Jordan: Running the Numbers illuminate the consequences of some of American’s cultural choices, making visible what simple statistics cannot. Both imaginative and documentary, each image portrays a specific quantity of something: 15 million sheets of office paper (5 minutes of paper use); 106,000 aluminum cans (30 seconds of can consumption) 2.3 million folded prison uniforms (equal to the number of Americans incarcerated in 2005.) His images offer thought-provoking critiques of the American lifestyle, corporate practices, and government policies.
Potential themes include but are not limited to:
- Sustainable lifestyles in your community
- UNH campus sustainable infrastructure (Transit system, EcoLine project, local/organic dining, etc.)
- UNH by the numbers: visualizing UNH’s impact (visual representations of how much energy, water, waste, etc. are generated/consumed at UNH)
- How students can impact sustainability at UNH
- What sustainability means to your education
- Etc.
The goal of the UNH “What Sustainability Means to Me” Video & Image Contest is to create a collection of thought-provoking videos and images showcasing the sustainability commitment and actions UNH students are undertaking and to make these videos and images available to the public. Like Chris Jordan’s provocative work, we envision these student-created videos and images will get people thinking and talking about sustainability. By making these videos and images available to the public, the Museum of Art and the UNH Sustainability Academy, in keeping with their respective missions, promote teaching through the arts and further the sustainability commitment and leadership of UNH.
