About the Contest
The Sustainability Institute and the Museum of Art of the University of New Hampshire first hosted the video and image competition to coincide with the Janury 28 - April 4, 2012 exhibition Chris Jordan: Running The Numbers at the Museum of Art, UNH. This year, the Sustainability Institute and the Museum of Art, UNH are hosting the annual student video and image contest in which contestants are asked to answer the question “What Sustains Us?”
Two exhibitions in the Museum serve as catalysts for the theme of how specific cultures influences current lifestyle choices and perceptions of the world.
Sacred Landscapes of Peru: The Photographs of Carl Austin Hyatt presents black and white photographs of archeological sites and contemporary life in the Peruvian Highlands. The images depict a vibrant culture that continues to perform sacred rites that have been practiced for generations. The mountainous environment serves as the background for the photographer’s exploration of how spirituality and the landscape intersect.
Running simultaneously, California Impressionism, Paintings from the Irvine Museum highlights 29 artists whose work reflects the spectacular vistas of the Californian landscape during the early twentieth century. This special exhibition, with lush depictions of undeveloped Southern California brings into question our relationship with the environment and the responsibility to preserve and maintain these spaces for future generations.
Students are asked to consider the work in each of these exhibitions before creating their submissions and to reflect on their backgrounds—whether as a native New Englander, or a member of Generation “Y”—every culture has traditions that have been maintained or altered by successive generations. By questioning how personal relationships with families, friends, communities, and social networks are rooted to the environment, we discover how we adapt and respond to external cultural forces.
We challenge students to tackle these issues and create a truly reflective image or video for this contest.
